What Equality?

I rarely do serious posts but today I've read and seen a few things that have made me angry.

It's been in the news that Amazon have had to pull a line of t-shirts;

Apparently the slogans "keep calm and hit her" and "keep calm and rape a lot" were not to everyones liking. It's not just Amazon that have been selling these t-shirts but also clothing stores such as Topman.

A quick search online and what you find is astounding;

Both of these were taking from the Lush T-shirts website.

You don't have to look very far or for very long to see hundreds of these t-shirts that mock rape, domestic violence and a right to say no.

I don't feel like I am an extreme feminist. I believe we all deserve equality. That is why these sorts of messages make me angry. The majority (but not all) are aimed towards women and seeing them as objects, whether that is a sexual object or a punching bag. Topman's t-shirt was a list of reasons why "I'm sorry" such as drunkenness and provocation. These are the excuses so often used and so harmful to so many women, children and men's lives.

These shirts do not make the public more "aware" of domestic violence. They are simply there to provoke a reaction. Whilst the companies like Amazon say they didn't deliberately mean to cause offensive, it it absolutely laughable that at no point did anyone think to point out how disgusting and in Amazon's case sexist these shirts are.

These are not funny, not even "offensive funny" and this just goes to show that even in the 21st century it's an uneven battle.

Over and Out xx
